Charity

CHARITY. What does charity mean to you? Anywhere in the world it may only mean the same. It is sharing, giving what you can to those who are needy. But not mos people know what this word mean. Some may use the word to gain popularity and win the race if they are politicians; others may use it to gain money and power if they need the budget and some may use it to gain a person's heart and be adored and loved.

I used to have a best friend, whose husband left them for some reasons. The husband used to donate goods and may other things to the batch mates for purposes of getting together; the athletes for their uniforms, the out-of school children and so many more. On the other hand, I used to see how my best friend struggle to look for money to support her three children who are still in high school and elementary. I go with her when she files loans to be able to give her children their basic needs for school and their daily lives. Often, during her busy schedule, she asks me to help her in some tasks like setting an appointment with the dentist and doctor for purposes of check-ups. Sometimes I would find her giving her kids a treat after working as a teacher and online as a virtual assistant. She also does weddings, birthdays and other special occasions' coordination to help her in their needs. All of these she does for her kids. While the husband does charity for other people.

I once heard my best friend's eldest daughter say ask, "doesn't charity begin at home?" Oh, that was indeed correct. I laughed and my best friend said, "oh yes. It should start from home." And her daughter replied, "why is my dad doing charity to others when in fact he can't do that to us?" "Well" my best friend replied, "that is how he defines charity." And I was asked the same question, huh, I chuckled and said, "Your dad never learned what charity meant. Maybe back in his elementary school, she never had the chance to be taught by her teacher and even by her mom."

As it is defined, Charity is the practice of benevolent giving and caring. But for a person to be considered charitable, he needs to have a clean heart. For my best friend's husband, I never consider that act as charity but instead it is a way of trying to gain the trust of other people. Because he was trying to gain the trust and love of a prospect he had who was his batch mate. If he thinks that  his being charitable in that way is a blessing. then I am sure that is not considered a plus on the day that he has to face the Lord. For it is said that charity, no matter how it is defined, will always start at home.
